
Stop the Flicker: Dealing with Electrical Noise in Your UV Arrays
If you’ve got a few large-scale printing presses running in one shop, you know exactly how chaotic the electrical environment gets. Those mercury UV bulbs run on high-voltage arcs. When you’ve got a dozen of them humming along, things get “noisy.” That electrical noise—or EMI, if you want to get technical—is usually the culprit when your ballasts start flickering or your PLC systems start throwing random errors for no apparent reason. It’s frustrating, and it kills your momentum. Keeping the arc steady The secret is all in the stability of that arc discharge. Think of a mercury UV bulb as more than just a glass tube; it’s basically a controlled plasma source. To keep things from going sideways, we keep a really tight grip on the electrode geometry and gas pressure. Why? Because it keeps the arc centered and steady. When some massive piece of machinery kicks on across the room and the power grid dips or spikes, your bulbs shouldn’t even notice.
