It usually comes down to two things: how the light hits the surface and how you handle the heat. The balance of power Mercury lamps throw out a broad spectrum of UV light, mostly peaking at 254nm. We figure out the specs based on how much light actually hits your material. Now, you might think “more wattage equals faster speed,” but it’s not that simple. If you crank the power too high just to speed up the line, you’ll hit a problem called “skinning.” That’s when the top layer dries instantly, but the bottom stays wet. It’s a nightmare. You have to find that sweet spot between your power density and how fast your conveyor is moving. Dealing with the heat Heat is the absolute enemy here. A high-output tube puts out a ton of infrared energy right along with the UV. If your fans or water jackets aren’t pulling that heat away fast enough, the quartz envelope gets stressed. Then, the lamp burns out way before it should. We build our envelopes to take a beating from these thermal cycles, but your housing still needs to keep things cool.
